About This Piece

Created in 1984, the Birkin adopted a roomy, double-handled design that contrasted with Hermès' more formal Kelly. This 35 cm example uses smooth Box calf in Brique, a brick-red shade; the leather develops a polished sheen rather than Togo's textured grain. Gold hardware accompanies a Square B stamp (c. 1998).
