A collector’s guide to zipper hardware, shoulder-strap clasps and single versus double-ring construction.

Introduction

Few handbags are as instantly recognisable as the Hermès Kelly. Its trapezoidal silhouette, sculpted top handle and belted closure have remained remarkably consistent through generations. Yet beneath this familiar form, many small functional details have continued to evolve.

Hermès traces the design to the ladies’ bag with straps created by Robert Dumas in the 1930s. Its later association with Grace Kelly transformed it into an enduring icon. As the official Hermès history of the Kelly explains, the bag has been continually reinterpreted while retaining its defining codes.

The zipper inside the bag, the clasp on its shoulder strap and the rings supporting the handle and strap can all offer clues about its era. The central point is simple: a vintage Kelly does not need to look exactly like a modern Kelly to be correct. A detail that appears unfamiliar today may be entirely appropriate for an earlier period.

1 Zipper Head and Zipper Hardware

Earlier Kelly bags and period-specific hardware

Earlier Hermès Kelly bags do not always carry the Hermès-branded zipper components familiar to contemporary collectors. On some vintage examples, the interior pocket zipper is marked ÉCLAIR, a historic French zipper manufacturer.

An ÉCLAIR zipper on an older Hermès bag should therefore not automatically be considered unusual. It may be a period-correct component. When examining a piece such as the Hermès Kelly 32 Green Suede, the zipper should be considered together with the date stamp, leather, construction and other hardware.

The move towards modern Hermès zipper hardware

Over subsequent decades, Hermès refined its zipper construction and introduced more house-branded components. Later examples may feature Hermès markings on the zipper pull, while another recognisable detail is the small H-shaped zipper stop at the end of the track.

Surviving examples suggest that the H-shaped zipper stop began appearing around the early 2000s. This should be understood as a transition rather than a universal cutoff, as component use may overlap and bags may later undergo servicing.

Rather than assigning ÉCLAIR zippers a fixed end date, it is more accurate to recognise that earlier vintage examples may carry ÉCLAIR hardware, while Hermès zipper construction evolved over subsequent decades.

On more recent Kelly bags, the interior zipper adopts a broader, flatter pull with a distinctly angular profile and discreet Hermès engraving. Compared with the earlier circular-H pull, this contemporary version appears cleaner and more substantial, reflecting the continuing refinement of the Kelly’s functional details while preserving its familiar character.

2 The Vintage Shoulder Strap Clasp

The shoulder-strap clasp—often described as a mousqueton or snap hook—is one of the clearest visual differences between some vintage and modern Kelly bags.

The old-style Kelly clasp

On many vintage examples, particularly bags from the 1970s and 1980s, the clasp appears smaller, slimmer and more elongated. Its body is relatively flat, with a narrow hook opening and a comparatively long lever.

The result is a distinctly mechanical, almost jewellery-like component. Its compact scale is well suited to the smaller attachment rings found on many earlier Kelly bags.

This relationship between ring and clasp can be seen on earlier pieces such as the Hermès Kelly 28 Brique Box Leather. Rather than viewing each component separately, the hardware should be understood as a coordinated system.

The modern Kelly clasp

Later clasps generally appear thicker, rounder and more substantial, with a wider opening that is easier to operate. Hermès uses the term “large snap hook” when describing the hardware on a current Kelly-compatible shoulder strap.

Placed side by side, the difference is clear: vintage clasps tend to be slim and elongated, while modern versions are generally larger, rounder and easier to operate. This change is closely connected to the evolution of the Kelly’s ring construction.

3 Single Ring Versus Double Ring

On many older Kelly bags, a single metal ring at each side supports the handle connection and also provides the attachment point for the shoulder-strap clasp.

The compact attachment space helps explain the slimmer proportions of the vintage clasp: a smaller ring requires a smaller hook. Single-ring examples can still be found among bags from the 1990s, so the design should not be assigned an absolute end date.

The introduction of the double-ring construction

Around the turn of the millennium, surviving examples begin to show an important structural transition from one shared ring to a double or split-ring arrangement. Collector references commonly place this transition around 2000–2001, although the timing should be treated as approximate rather than absolute.

By separating these functions, the double-ring construction gives the strap its own attachment point and can accommodate a larger, more rounded clasp. This should not be read as a simple permanent progression from vintage single ring to modern double ring. Different ring configurations can appear across later production, while production overlap and subsequent Hermès servicing may also affect the hardware found on a particular bag. Ring construction is therefore most useful as contextual evidence rather than a definitive dating rule.

Three Details, One Continuous Story

Read together, these details reveal an evolution rather than a simple old-versus-new divide. Earlier Kelly bags may feature ÉCLAIR or other period-specific zipper hardware, slimmer shoulder-strap clasps and a single shared ring. Around the turn of the millennium, double-ring configurations began to appear, while zipper and clasp hardware also continued to evolve.

These changes did not necessarily occur at exactly the same time, nor should every feature be treated as a permanent chronological progression. Production overlap, different configurations and later Hermès servicing mean that transitional examples may combine details associated with different periods. The silhouette remains unmistakably Kelly, but the engineering beneath it has evolved in subtle ways. For collectors, these details offer valuable clues to a bag’s period when they are read together rather than in isolation.

What Collectors Should Remember

An unfamiliar detail is not automatically an incorrect one. When examining a vintage Kelly, consider the zipper, clasp and ring construction together with its date stamp, materials, stitching, proportions, provenance and known service history.

These features can help place a bag within a broader period, but no single hardware detail should be used as conclusive proof of authenticity or date. Components may overlap across production years, and hardware may be repaired or replaced during a bag’s lifetime.

For collectors, that is part of the fascination: every vintage Kelly rewards a closer look.
